What is Yoga and why do we celebrate it?

Yoga is an ancient physical, mental, and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.

International yoga day?

International Yoga Day is celebrated on June 21 every year. It was first proposed by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 and was later declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015. The day is celebrated to raise awareness about the benefits of yoga and to encourage people to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Yoga is an ancient practice that originated in India. It is a physical, mental, and spiritual practice that aims to bring harmony between the body and mind. The eight limbs of yoga are Yama (abstinences), Niyama (observances), Asana (yoga postures), Pranayama (breath control), Pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation), and Samadhi (absorption). These eight limbs are considered as the foundation of yoga practice1.

On International Yoga Day, people all over the world participate in yoga sessions and events. This year’s theme is “Yoga for well-being” which focuses on how yoga can promote physical and mental well-being.
